What do you do when you fall off of a bike? You get right back on that bike. At least, that’s what your mom tells you to do.
But now that we’re adults, we don’t have our moms and dads to tell us not to give up. We have to rely on ourselves. Our own drive. We have to be brave. Suck it up. Whatever you want to call it. Actually, it was Amanda who sent me a swim workout yesterday that got me back to the pool this morning. I guess you can say she played the role of one of my parents (even though I’m older than her — just play along, K?).
If Amanda can get back on a bike after the kind of fall she had a couple of weeks ago, then I can get my butt back to the bool…er, pool. Okay, maybe we can’t rely on ourselves entirely.
This morning’s pool workout was pretty great. I don’t necessarily like getting up at 5 on a non-workday, but at least I got there on the correct day and at the right time. I was in the pool by 5:40. I had on my cap and my goggles, and had my workout written on a piece of note paper tucked safely inside a Ziploc bag so I could still read it if it got wet. (I got this idea from Amanda, too, who told me she got the idea from me — I put my phone in a Ziploc on really rainy running days. Haha!) I had to share a lane, but I was okay with it.
Here’s the workout Amanda sent me, if you are interested: Swim Fast to Get Fast. I don’t necessarily want to get fast, but I want to be challenged. To be perfectly honest, the pool can be a bit boring for a runner. I swam 1,200 yards in about 40 minutes.
Post-swim, I feel great. I feel like I got a workout in. I drank 16 ounces of lemon + lime NUUN afterward. I’m energized and I’m hungry. A sign of a good workout! For me, anyway.
The Shin Who Shall Not Be Named is feeling okay this morning. It’s sore. I can feel it. But it doesn’t hurt. My left arch aches a little and I wonder if that’s giving me the soreness in the SWSNBN. I will be taking a week off running.
But now that I’ve made peace with the pool, I think I’m gonna be okay.
Title inspired by one of my favorite novels, Peace Like a River by Leif Enger.

Awesome! I'm envious since I don't know how to swim. I might like to try that workout. A 5 a.m. pool workout sounds like a fun and different challenge.
Nice job! I can't believe you got up at 5 am on a non-workday either… Even more impressive!
That damn SWSNBN better go away soon so you can run, or I'll sic my bad heel after it! No one messes with a bad heel!Excellent mind games for getting that swim in – whatever it takes girl!!Happy Weekend!
Are you REALLY older than me? Barely probably. =) So glad I could help get you back in the pool!! i have really started to look forward to my time in the pool! And that workout is simple yet challenging, only makes sense to a swimmer I guess. I just finished up doing it too and I loved it! I certainly got winded and got my heart rate up!!And yes, if I can get back on my bike then you, my friend, can get back to the bool! And you did!!!!
Glad the shin is feeling better Kerrie!!Getting wet in the a.m.–should be reserved for Hawaii!
Ugh swim is so difficult to me..any tips would be great. Thanks for the link!
Yay for getting back in the pool! I seriously need to learn how to properly swim. I've love to do a tri or adventure race one day. Glad it felt good for ya!
I find the pool boring too.I love Peace Like a River–great novel!
