We have been making Breakfast Casserole on Christmas morning in my family for as long as I can remember. It’s cheesey, bacony, bready, eggy goodness. It is my ultimate comfort food. It is also so, so bad for you, as you can imagine.
The ingredients are 1 pound of bacon, a pound of cheddar, a loaf of sliced French bread, milk, and a dozen eggs (oh, and butter for greasing the casserole dish ). Basically, you diced the bread and bacon (about 1×1), and you shred the cheese. Beat the eggs. Dump the bread into the greased 8×10 casserole dish. Pour the eggs over the bread. Cover the bread with the bacon, then spread the cheese on top. Pour milk into the casserole dish until it comes up to be level with the top of the bread (a clear casserole dish helps). Bake covered with foil at 350 for about 45 minutes, then remove the foil and bake till bubbly — about 15 minutes.
It is so good. I can’t wait. Better go running Christmas morning.
What’s the worst thing you eat during the holidays?

The list is far too long… but I think I need to make that breakfast casserole for my family. 🙂
Isn't it so annoying that all the good comfort food is so bad for you?!?!? Merry Christmas to you and yours!!!
So we make that and call it “egg-bake” each fall when we tailgate for a big Michigan game. We use sausage and ham though, instead of bacon. I guess I blindly made the stuff and didn't think about the calories 🙂 It is delicious though, but certainly a once-a-year dish. I'll be running an informal half-marathon Christmas Eve morning with my running group to try to counteract all the sweets and desserts I'll be eating :)Merry Christmas to you!!
No way am I skipping breakfast casserole at our house! LOVE IT! 🙂 This is why we run. Enjoy guilt free!
This year I made saltine cracker candy, buying fat free crackers…like its gonna help. Baked goods are by far the worst thing I eat
Wow, a heart attack casserole! I may try it….
Sounds delicious … but full of calories. Good thing you're going for a run before chowing down! Happy Holidays. http://www.dashingdiva.net
That sounds so good! Thanks for sharing. My problem is not eating one specific thing – it is not paying attention to portion sizes!
That sounds good! I always have something sweet for breakfast Christmas morning – pancakes or cinnamon rolls!
Oh man, that sounds delicious. I'm eating a co-worker's Christmas baking as I type. And I'll start my own baking extravaganza tonight. No bake chocolate cookies, anyone?
yummy!!! I try to not worry about that on Christmas day. Eat Up!!
That casserole sounds really good. The worst thing I eat over Christmas is my sister's Christmas ice cream. It's divine – chocolate ice cream with nuts and marshmallows and chocolate chunks through it. One year I'm going to ask for a batch of it as a present and not share!
Once a year can't hurt! Enjoy! The worst thing I eat is cheese ball with crackers. I eat myself into a cheese ball coma.
It's not one thing that I eat that is so bad. I'm usually too full from the meal. It's the neutral colored plate of food that gets me: dressing, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, bread, etc. At least it's just one meal. I'm not a big leftover person. Happy holidays!
Mmm!! That sounds really good and I ate something similar Christmas morning but with sausage in it, my sister-in-law made it and it was really good!!
I think the worst thing i ate was about 10lbs of chocolate! Seriously..it had to be that much!
That does sound delicious. Very similar to a casserole that mother in law makes for Christmas. I try to limit myself to a small square so I don't feel deprived .
