When Can I Run Again?

  • Kerrie

On Monday I met with my sports podiatrist. I got my orthotics. I asked, “When can I run again?”

“Well,” he said. “Twelve weeks for sure, but 16 is better.”

“Sixteen?!”

I asked for specific dates and he said to count 16 from May/12 from when I first went to see him in June. So, September 10th.

“But I have a 10K at the end of September,” I whined. He said I could do it, but I would have to run-walk.

I feel ready. I want to get outside. I’m going to start walking first. Tomorrow. And I’m taking the dog with me.

You might be surprised at how quickly (and safely) you can be ready for a 10K with the base you've built over the last year. After I ran the marathon in March, I cut way, way back — but I haven't felt much of a loss in cardiovascular fitness. I baby my knees and ankles, but I *can* run much more than I *should*.

Enjoy your walks, be positive and keep cross training – that will make the time go by faster and keep you ready for your race.

I'm hoping Sept. 10 gets here soon for you… not so much for me because I don't have a game to cover on Sept. 4 and I want to enjoy Labor Day weekend, but I hope you get to Sept. 10 before I do :)No, seriously, you are doing great in keeping yourself occupied and sane (dog-yelling notwithstanding) and healthy while not running. Eventually, all this will make you stronger.

Woohoo! YOu have a date to look forward to! This is great Kerrie! Run-walking is a good way to start – remember I had to do that for several months and it really paid off. Just dn't rush it too much & you'll be back!

That's great that you can start running again! I tend to avoid dogs during my runs, but I guess it's different when it's your own dog!I've added you to my blog of running moms!
