It went like this:
Sunday night: Hmmm. My foot sorta hurts. What is that?
Monday morning: I bet it’s just sore from 14 miles. I’ll just do this little recovery run…
Monday night: Maybe I shouldn’t have run today.
Tuesday early morning: Why does my freaking foot still hurt? I’m wearing running shoes to work today; they can suck it.
Tuesday morning: Do NOT limp, do NOT limp, do NOT limp.
Tuesday mid-morning: Okay, this foot is pissing me off. Maybe I should take some rest days.
Tuesday afternoon: Maybe it’s in my head. Maybe it doesn’t hurt anymore. *ankle circles* Hmmmm. *push on it with index finger* Damn.
Tuesday evening: What time does the pool open tomorrow?
My foot does feel better than Monday night and even better than it felt Tuesday afternoon, but I’m going to be taking it easy this week, just to be cautious. I went for a 30-minute pool run this morning (recap to come). Tonight, I will do a 30-Day Shred video (with the exception of the jumping stuff) and skip my treadmill workout, even though I was looking forward to some hill intervals (no, really, I was; I swear!). I’ll probably be at the pool again Friday morning and I will reassess my foot before my scheduled 4 miles on Sunday.
If I learned anything from my sports podiatrist dude last year, it was that you shouldn’t worry unless the pain doesn’t go away after a few days. Then, worry.
Next weekend, I have 17 miles planned. Yowzers! That will be one mile shy of my longest run before I got injured last year. It feels super early to be running 17 miles — the race is not until June 25th – but that’s what’s on Jeff Galloway’s plan, so I’m trusting him.
I was hoping to do the Lake Sammamish Half to try and break up the 17 (and get some bling in the process), but I just can’t afford it right now. And, we have a dog show in Bremerton, which is not close to our house, that weekend so I won’t be able to run with the WeROKC group. It is possible that I will be running it on my own at some random time in the middle of the day.
But, to be honest, I don’t mind. I’ll just be happy to be running it.

Those Spankles!! I do hope yours gets better…soon! 17 is no joke…is a certain Tall friend going to keep you company?Good luck at the dog show!
Good job listening to the body and backing off. Injuries are so scary and leave us forever worried about their return. I hope this blows over quickly and you destroy that 17 miler!!!
Better to be safe than sorry! I hope your foot feels okay with a bit of rest.
You are so smart to ease of… I'm such an idiot and always try to “make” it go away! I truly hope it feels better soon. 🙁
oh, it sucks when something hurts like that. I sure hope it goes away and you get to do your 17 miler this weekend. Good luck!!!
I like that philosophy of hurting for a few days thing…I can remember that. I always freak out and think something is broken then a few days later I'm like-what hurt again?I hope your ankle shapes up soon!!! And the rest days will be good for ya!! Dont forget the ice!!Oh and when I worked in Bremerton I would see a few Bald Eagles every time I rounded the bend to drive into town off of 16. But I bet you will be taking the ferry…
I hope your ankle feels better soon. Good luck on those 17 miles!
We must be on the same plan, and at about the same spot! I am running the Windermere in Spokane on May 14th – it will be my first too. I had to take a few weeks off for a surgery, so I cut off the last few weeks of the program to get caught back up. I figure 23 for my longest run is plenty! Good luck with the foot – I have ongoing issues too that seem to come and go. Advil all the way!!
Oh no! Hope your pain is just one of the friendly reminders you are a runner and will be gone before you can blink 😉
I hope your ankle feels better.
Take care of that foot! Hang in there! Go 17!
As someone who tried to run through my case of runner's knee – listen to your body. Every training plan has some slack built in for injuries.
